Basset Hound Ownership and Training Challenges

All dogs have desirable and less desirable aspects. Although Basset Hounds can make wonderful pets, they can present their own set of challenges as well. Some of these include stubbornness, shedding, gassiness, chronic illnesses, and loudness. This article will explore some of these challenges a little closer.

Stubborn
There is no getting around the fact that Basset Hounds are stubborn. Any type of training, including housebreaking, can be a long and arduous task because the dogs are so independent. You will need patience and complete consistency to make any headway with housebreaking this stubborn breed. Up to six months of diligence with crate training is probably only the first of many challenges that you will need to keep in mind when choosing a Basset Hound.

Shedding
A Basset Hound’s short hair will shed a lot, sticking to your hands, clothing, and possibly every surface in your home. Extra effort will be required to clean up after your pet as he sheds. Although it may not be the worst thing in the world, it is definitely something to think about.

Gassiness
Gassiness is often influenced by diet, which is something that you can control as his owner. However, you don’t want to be blindsided by the fact that the stench can be quite strong once you get your new Basset Hound home. A diet of real meat and other fresh foods can help control the gas and the smell, but it can still be an issue.

Chronic Illnesses
Like many special breeds, Basset Hounds are susceptible to a many chronic health problems, such as joint problems, ear infections, and certain skin disorders. Generally, these are due to poor breeding practices and to their unique body type. Chronic illnesses are important to consider, since some issues can become quite costly.

Noisiness
Although a Basset Hound’s bark is low, it can carry a very long way, which may cause issues between you and your neighbors. The behavior can be curbed if training is started soon after bringing your Basset Hound home.

Some breeds, such as the Basset Hound, face more challenges than others. Although it may sound like this particular breed comes with an endless parade of issues, the goal is to help you decide if you want to deal with those issues before you bring a Basset Hound home for your new pet. It is simply important to be prepared for what you will have to deal with, so that you can enjoy your time with your new dog.
